Back care for manual labourers
Back pain is very common; in any given year 40% to 50% of the population experiences it and virtually all of us will be affected by it at some stage in our lives. It costs the healthcare industry and the economy billions of pounds and is responsible for over four million lost working days every year. It is therefore important that everybody knows what to do to prevent back pain and what to do when it strikes. With the right information and the right response, we can all reduce the impact it may have on us and our lives.
What to do when you experience back pain:
- Stay active; bed rest will not cure back pain
- Use simple over-the-counter painkillers to control the pain
- In the initial hours or days use a cold pack to help relieve pain from an injury. After a few days a hot pack may give better relief
- In most cases there is no need to visit your GP or other health professional since it is highly likely your pain will disappear within a few days or weeks
- Even after the pain has disappeared stay active, exercise regularly and look after your back to prevent the pain reoccurring
